Food: Just about any sweet treat
Drink: Diet Coke or a really good margarita
Music: Very eclectic – classical, soul, reggae, country, Irish folk, famous ladies like Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James and more
Dance: I chair bob. That’s about the best you’re going to get out of me … two left feet or some such saying.
Creature: We have a motley furbaby crew ruled by ringleader Tally (a.k.a Momma). She keeps her crazy daughter, Suzy, and our cat, Foo Foo, in line. We adopted Tally and Suzy from a dachshund rescue group and Foof adopted us when she showed up on our doorstep.
Color: Shades of green all the way!
Who inspired me when growing up? That’s a tough one because so many people planted the seeds that make me the woman I am today. First, I would say my parents, of course, who were hardworking blue-collar folks who instilled the importance of work ethics. Next, I’d pick my mom, aunt and grandmothers who showed my sister and me how to be strong independent women. And, finally, I would say two particular teachers – Mrs. Straffin and Mrs. Franze – who helped spark my love of writing and who molded my skills so I could become the writer I am today.
Who do you look to for inspiration? Creative writers who challenge me to step outside of my comfort zone and try new things.
I started my career in 1986 as a newspaper reporter in an Illinois college town. A couple years later, however, I found my professional place – university and community college promotions. I love to go to work everyday knowing that our efforts help people who wish to better their lives through education. My writing is one creative outlet. Cooking and baking are another.
